Vacation has long been a tool for taking time off from our day-to-day grind. It's thought of as an escape. A time to rest, relax and recharge. But, I have found that this is merely scratching the surface of something much more important to our individual wellbeing.
Several years ago, I jetted off to Bali to meet up with my dad for a joint vacation, but during my time abroad, I found myself dreading my return home. I soon understood that I was not improving myself by pushing away the truth that my everyday life was not serving me. I wanted to be happy in all aspects of my life, both during work and not.
So I returned home, quit my corporate job, and put forth the effort to make my day-to-day grind a blessing.This meant incorporating travel into my work, and work into my travel.
Since my time in Bali, I've been committed to doing what serves me on this path, and being conscious of not doing things that don't make me feel like my highest, best self.
So how can you ensure that you find and stay on the path that is best serving you? It starts with being mindful, and here are three ways you can do it:
1. Keep Journal
I know I keep repeating this but reflection is SO important for knowing which way to go in life and WHY!
Have a journal or notebook with you at all times. Use it to jot down ideas, inspiration, drawings, quotes, and messages that move you. Look back at it on days that you feel uninspired, lost or confused, to give you a boost in the right direction.
I kept a book like this during my travels around India, and whenever I felt lost and didn't know where to go or what to do next I would open it and the words on the page would be exactly what I needed to hear. It would uplift my spirit and motivate me to move in the direction of my truth- which at that time was 1) Travel 2) Meditate 3) ONLY do work I LOVE
Having a daily mindfulness meditation practice can truly help you get to know yourself up close and personal. Even 5 minutes a day can help provide the clarity you need for your direction. Simply take a comfortable seat, and focus on the breath flowing in and out of your nose. When your mind begins to wander (which it will A LOT), calmly recognize that it is wandering and come right back to focusing on your breath. Do not get lost in thought, do not beat yourself up for not getting it "right", it is all about practice.
Meditation is like a muscle, the more you do it, the easier it gets, but still some days will be harder than others. Remember - the harder it is for you to sit still and meditate, the MORE YOU NEED IT and the more you will benefit from it!
3. Follow Your Bliss
The easiest way to know that you are on the right path, is to ask yourself "am I following my bliss?" Which means, are you following the path that brings you the most joy and happiness? If you LOVE painting, PAINT! Paint with all your love and passion, make it your purpose to share your art with the world!
**It is a MYTH that you can not make money doing what you love! YOU CAN, and YOU WILL If you want to.
TAKE ACTION NOW:
- Buy a small journal that you can carry with you at all times.
- Sit in your meditation space, and take 3 long-deep breaths
- Meditate for 5-10 minutes focusing on your breath flowing in & out of your nose.
- Journal about the following questions..
What lights you up more than anything else?
What would you do for free because you love it SO much?
What do you love talking about, and could talk about all day?
What makes you feel young, alive and vibrant?
What brings you the most joy?
